We want to hear from women all across the UK. We know there are plenty of women out there with things to say and lots of feminism taking place all over the country which we’re keen to hear about, but we won’t be able to make it to every city ourselves (unfortunately!).

So, this is where you can help us!

We want women to set up Women Speak Out-style discussions in their own cities and then tell us about it so we can include them on the blog. This way women can meet up and have an informal discussion with other women in their local area (which can be fun and inspiring in itself!) and also be included in our documentation of feminist voices and views across the country.

How do I hold my own Women Speak Out discussion?

Hold it in whatever way you like! Find a relatively quiet cafe, tell a few people and before you know it you’re having a discussion about what it means to be a woman.

No topic is off-limits – it’s just an opportunity to sound off on the issues affecting you and to share your thoughts and experiences on being a woman and feminism with others. Take a look at our booklet of the discussions we held in 2010 to see the sorts of questions and topics we covered and take it from there. You can download a copy here (PDF document): Women Speak Out booklet 2010 – 11

It doesn’t matter how many women take part – some Women Speak Out discussions have been small, with only four or five women, while others have been much bigger, with up to 20 participants.

As well as asking women you know to take part, you could also invite women from the local student and trade unions and those involved in community groups. It could be an opportunity to seek out like-minded women in your area, get together for a chat, and do some locally-based consciousness-raising – in addition to making sure women’s voices in your part of the country are included in Women Speak Out.

What do we do after the discussion?

Send us an e-mail telling us what you talked about with some quotes from your discussion. You don’t have to send us a minute-by-minute account – just a few key comments and an overview of the topics you discussed and the types of views that were raised will be enough. It would also be good to get some details of the women who take part e.g. their first names, occupation and what sort of feminist activity they’re involved in (if any). This way we can build a better picture of the nature of feminism across the country. We’d also be delighted if you could send us pictures of your discussion.

We will then post a record of your discussion on the blog and let people know about it!

Can you help?

If you would like Jessica and Michelle to join you, please get in touch. We can’t guarantee we’ll be available, but we’ll see what we can do. But we can certainly help with promoting your discussion and offer tips on how to run it.
